What is Australian Invoice Generator?

Australian invoicing is governed by the Australian Taxation Office (ATO). The Goods and Services Tax (GST) applies at a rate of 10% on most goods and services. Businesses with annual turnover of $75,000 AUD or more must register for GST. Once registered, they must issue tax invoices for any supply over $82.50 (including GST). A tax invoice differs from a regular invoice: it must include the words 'Tax Invoice', your Australian Business Number (ABN), the GST amount charged (or a statement that the total includes GST), and sufficient detail for the buyer to identify the goods or services supplied. The ATO requires businesses to retain tax invoice records for at least 5 years.

How to use

  1. Enter your business name, address, and ABN in the From section — the ABN is mandatory for tax invoices over $82.50.
  2. Add your client's name and address in the Bill To section.
  3. Add line items with clear descriptions, quantities, and unit prices excluding GST.
  4. Set the tax rate to 10% for GST-applicable supplies. Some supplies (fresh food, health services, education) are GST-free — leave tax at 0% for those.
  5. Review that the invoice clearly states 'Tax Invoice' and shows the GST amount separately.
  6. Download as PDF and retain a copy for your ATO records for a minimum of 5 years.

Why it matters

GST-registered clients (businesses that are also registered for GST) can only claim GST input tax credits using a valid tax invoice. An invoice missing the ABN, the GST amount, or the words 'Tax Invoice' may be rejected, preventing your client from claiming their GST credit on their Business Activity Statement (BAS). This can create friction in B2B relationships. For businesses below the $75,000 turnover threshold who choose not to register for GST, invoices should clearly state that no GST is included to avoid confusion.

Pro tip

If your annual turnover is under $75,000 AUD, you are not required to register for GST — but if you primarily serve other GST-registered businesses, registration may be advantageous. Being GST-registered allows you to claim back the GST you pay on your own business expenses (software, equipment, office supplies), which can add up. If you are on the threshold, speak with a registered BAS agent or accountant to assess whether voluntary registration makes financial sense for your situation.
