What Is This Tool?
A classroom name picker randomly selects a student from your class roster for cold calling, participation, or task assignment. Educational research by Robert Bjork on retrieval practice shows that random selection improves engagement and learning retention compared to volunteer-only answering, where the same few students always respond. This tool is the digital equivalent of the classic popsicle stick technique - names on sticks in a cup drawn at random - but faster and visible to the whole class on a projected screen. It runs in the browser with no login and no app, so it works the same on an interactive whiteboard, a teacher laptop, a Chromebook, or an iPad.
Why It Matters
Random selection keeps all students alert and engaged because anyone could be called next. Volunteer-based participation creates deep inequality - research shows 20% of students account for 80% of voluntary participation. The unpredictability of random selection activates attention in ways that volunteer formats do not, leading to higher engagement across the whole class rather than just the most confident students. It also takes the teacher out of the decision, so no student can read favouritism or punishment into who gets called.
Cold calling without raising anxiety
Random calling only helps learning if students do not dread it. A few practices keep it safe: tell the class in advance that you will be using a picker so it is a routine, not an ambush; allow a student to say 'pass, come back to me' once per lesson; and give a few seconds of thinking time, or a brief turn-and-talk with a partner, before you draw a name. Use the picker for questions that have room for reasoning rather than single right-or-wrong recall under pressure. The aim is to spread participation, not to catch anyone out.
Getting through the whole class fairly
Turn on 'remove on pick' so each drawn name leaves the pool. The tool then works through the entire roster without repeats, which students perceive as fairer than a raw random draw where one person might be picked three times before someone else is picked at all. When the pool empties, reset it for the next activity or the next lesson. If a student is absent, take their name out for that session so the flow is not interrupted by calling on an empty seat.
Beyond cold calling
The same roster works for assigning classroom jobs, choosing the order groups present, pairing students for peer review, picking who demonstrates at the board, or selecting a line leader. For group work, pick several names in a row with 'remove on pick' enabled to build a team, then repeat for the next team. Keeping one saved roster per class and reusing it each period saves setup time.
