Understanding Key Loan & Finance Concepts
Principal
The initial amount of money borrowed or financed before interest charges are applied. Each payment reduces this outstanding balance.
Interest Rate vs. APR
The interest rate is the base cost of borrowing. The APR (Annual Percentage Rate) includes additional lender fees and closing costs for the true annual cost.
Loan Term
The length of time to repay the loan. Longer terms lower the monthly payment but substantially increase total interest paid over the life of the loan.
Amortization Schedule
A detailed month-by-month table showing how each payment is divided between paying down principal balance and paying interest.
Down Payment
The upfront cash paid toward a purchase, reducing the total amount you need to borrow and often unlocking lower interest rates.
